Charles Brinsley Sheridan - the ships

How wonderful that these photos capturing the Holyhead steamers at work have survived!  As I look at these I sense that CBS was to Dun Laoghaire in the 1930's and 40's what I was to the harbour in the 1980's and beyond. As he was allowed privileged access, so too was I and how grateful I am for it.

In particular, the photos of a German Type XXI (21) U-boat at Dun Laoghaire are of great interest. After the war a lot of U-boats were scuttled by the Royal Navy to prevent them falling into enemy hands again. One such operation of sinkings was carried out from Lisahally, Northern Ireland.

U-2518 surrendered on 9th May 1945 at Horten in Norway. She was taken to Lisahally on 7th June but there was granted a reprieve and was handed over by the British to the French. On passage from Lisahally to France she called in to Dun Laoghaire Harbour on 7th February 1946. The U-boat stayed for three days before continuing on to France where she arrived on 14th February.  Renamed Roland Morillot, she survived until broken up in 1969.
